SMBC Supports Landmark CCS Projects in the UK
SMBC financed the world’s first gas-fired power plant with integrated carbon capture and storage (CCS), Net Zero Teesside Power (“NZT Power”), along with the associated carbon transportation and storage initiative, the Northern Endurance Partnership (“NEP”).
NZT Power is designed to capture up to 2 million tonnes of CO₂ annually, delivering low-carbon electricity to over 1 million UK homes. The NEP project will transport and store up to 4 million tonnes of CO₂ per year for 25 years, with potential for future expansion.
SMBC served as Mandated Lead Arranger and Hedging Provider for both transactions - critical milestones in advancing the energy transition, enhancing energy security, and supporting thousands of highly skilled jobs in Teesside and the Northeast.
