Striving toward greater sustainability
We recognise the complex and interconnected nature of today’s economic, social, and environmental challenges. At SMBC, we define sustainability as “creating a society in which today’s generation can enjoy economic prosperity and well-being and pass it on to future generations.” Reflecting the importance we place on this vision, social value creation has been established as one of the three pillars of our global strategy, Plan for Fulfilled Growth.
At SMBC, we are committed to embedding sustainability and social value creation across our business. One of the most impactful ways we do this is by providing sustainable financing and sharing our expertise with clients as we work together on the transition journey.
Green and sustainable finance
We aim to support our customers in their journey to sustainability by executing JPY ¥50 trillion in green and sustainable financing by 2030
Net zero by 2050
In 2021 SMBC Group set an ambition to align our financing portfolio to net zero by 2050 and to achieve net zero in our own operations by 2030.
SMBC is dedicated to industry best practices, actively participating in key sustainability initiatives such as the LMA (Loan Market Association) Sustainability Committee, ICMA (International Capital Markets Association) sustainable finance working groups, SBTi (Science Based Targets Initiative) expert advisory group and GFANZ. We integrate LMA, ICMA and the Poseidon principles in our operations, and leverage PCAF (Partnership for Carbon Accounting Financials) and TCFD (Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosers) to enhance our transparency and accountability.
