For the past ten years, I have been on an exciting journey at SMBC. My path began in what was previously the Maritime Finance department. I held different roles in front office, the most recent one being Head of the Maritime Finance team covering the EMEA region within the Transportation department.

I have always had a deep passion to do my part in making a positive impact in everything I undertake. So, when SMBC and the finance industry started placing a higher focus on sustainability, I was very keen to immerse myself into this area. Having had previous experience in client relations, I had an appreciation for the importance that ESG topics held in client investment decisions, along with the inherent challenges related to transitioning to net zero.

Today, I am the Head of Sustainability for SMBC Bank EU. It is a dynamic role and as cliché as it sounds, every day is truly different! I focus on defining and implementing our sustainability strategy for the European region, both in line with the Group’s ambitions and also the increasing requirements from EU regulators, ensuring that our business is aligned with our strategy. My role also involves collaborating across various departments to ensure we’re held accountable to the highest standards.

My career path wasn’t always linear. It took having proactive conversations, continuously looking for new challenges, and learning opportunities. SMBC has encouraged me to voice my career aspirations and has provided invaluable guidance along the way. I believe there is no ‘one size fits all’ career path at SMBC, as long as you take ownership of your development and drive your career, and that is what makes it so exciting to work here.

A highlight of my journey so far has been participating in the Global Bankers Programme in Tokyo, and in the Mirai leadership development programme. It connected me with colleagues from different locations, fostering a deeper and wider understanding of SMBC as well as myself, whilst also providing great opportunities to network. These programmes, along with all opportunities I have had to step outside of my comfort zone, have helped me to grow immensely.

What differentiates SMBC is its culture. Here respect, transparency and humility are core to our organisation. We work collaboratively, supporting each other through successes and challenges.

Reflecting back, I am grateful for the career shaping opportunities and support I have received at SMBC. It has been an incredibly rewarding experience. If there is any advice I would pass on to someone else is to be true to yourself and build a fulfilling career that is authentic to you.
