Rahul: Breaking barriers with bipolar disorder
Associate
London, UK.
I joined SMBC in 2020, on the (Kaika) Graduate programme. I’m grateful to have had the opportunity to rotate across different departments, giving me exposure to a variety of roles and responsibilities. From early on, I’ve been encouraged to be curious and confidently ask questions I previously would have been afraid to ask. One key thing that stands out for me is the culture of open discussion that is fostered at SMBC. I feel inspired to participate in discussions and challenge the status quo, especially regarding inclusivity – something that I feel passionately about.
Being diagnosed with bipolar disorder has brought significant changes to my personal and professional life. The constant drain on my energy, both mentally and physically can be overwhelming, challenging my motivation and self-esteem. Thankfully, the support systems put in place by SMBC have really helped to make a huge difference. From having empathetic line managers to the proactive wellbeing team and HR department, I’ve received unwavering support allowing me to perform at my best professionally; while knowing I have a strong safety net in place.
Upon joining the bank, I received a ‘Workplace adjustment passport’, a useful resource that equips me to have open conversations with my line managers about flexibility and the necessary adjustments for managing my condition. The HR department also arranged for me to meet with an occupational therapist, a session that provided valuable insights and boosted my confidence. These bespoke adjustments and ongoing communication have allowed me to be my true self within the organisation.
Beyond my role, I actively participate in our DRIVE employee networks. These groups are great for fostering community and advancing discussions around inclusivity. They provide a platform for sharing stories, seeking opportunities, and showcasing SMBC’s commitment to ensuring everyone feels that they belong.
SMBC’s hybrid and flexible working options are truly helpful to me and other colleagues. While some roles require more in-person presence, SMBC prioritises enabling employees to work in their optimal environment. Removing unnecessary barriers allows individuals to thrive, simple things like eliminating lengthy commutes during challenging periods make a big difference. I can still contribute meaningfully from home, avoiding taking unnecessary sick days. One key thing that I’ve learnt during my time at SMBC is that open and honest communication is crucial. Allowing myself to be vulnerable with those around me about my condition has enabled me to form strong bonds with my colleagues. This sense of belonging and support has been crucial to my journey at SMBC
