Yosuke (Dean) Uemura

Chief Risk Officer

Yosuke (Dean) Uemura is Managing Director and Chief Risk Officer for SMBC Group in the Americas. He was appointed to this role in November 2022 and is based in the firm’s New York office.

As Chief Risk Officer, Dean leads the SMBC Group in the Americas Risk function, which is responsible for developing and maintaining the risk management framework and embedding a strong culture of risk awareness and ownership across the Americas and the firm’s U.S. bank holding company, SMBC Americas Holdings, Inc. Dean oversees the setting of risk appetite and ensures that the risks (credit, market, liquidity, model, non-financial, enterprise and other) associated with transactions, new business initiatives, and new products generated by or booked within the Americas are identified, measured, independently reviewed and challenged, monitored, managed, and mitigated. Prior to his current role, Dean was Co-Head of Risk Management for the Americas.

Dean brings broad and extensive global experience to this role, including risk management and financial product expertise gained during his time in Tokyo, New York, Singapore, and London.

Dean spent eight years in New York with the Financial Products Department before his assignment with the Risk Management Department Americas Division in October 2008. He was appointed as Group Head of that same department in April 2009 and was subsequently appointed in 2012 as Group Head of Credit & Investment Planning in Tokyo. He later worked with the Risk Management Department, Asia Pacific Division in Singapore as the Group Head and then as Joint General Manager until March 2017.

Beginning in April 2017, Dean was based with the firm’s London office for three years, where he was Joint General Manager of the Specialized Products Department before returning to the Americas Division in April 2020 as Co-General Manager of the Risk Management Department, Americas Division, a role he held until assuming his current position as Chief Risk Officer.

Dean earned a Faculty of Law degree from Kyoto University and a Master of Business Administration from the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania. He also completed the Executive Management Program at The University of Tokyo.
