Diversity, Equity and Inclusion

Our people define us

At SMBC, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) is not only an imperative but a foundational value that is connected to the resiliency of our firm. We are creating an inclusive workplace that empowers employees to feel a sense of belonging and thrive. We believe that a workforce that reflects the diversity of the communities that we live, work, and serve will help us fulfill our mission to be "a trusted global solution provider committed to the growth of our customers and advancement of society”.

Finding your place is important: for us and you

Enterprise Resource Groups (ERGs) are voluntary, employee-led groups, driven by a common purpose: to foster a more inclusive work environment by empowering employees. ERGs are aligned to the DEI mission, vision and strategy by reinforcing the Bank’s commitment to an environment of inclusion. At SMBC, we have intentionally chosen to name our ERGs “Enterprise” Resource Groups to establish a mindset within the company that these groups are an important and necessary component to the Bank’s overall strategy.

Employee-led Enterprise Resource Groups promote inclusion

  • With a specific focus on the recruitment and advancement of Black employees, the Black Organization for Leadership and Development ERG provides a potent platform to promote leadership and skill enhancement for these employees, as well as an example for those yet to be recruited. Building a network and supportive environment are critical—we offer professional development programs, leadership opportunities, and networking events.

  • Asian and Pacific Islanders at SMBC will find a community that dedicates itself to engage and connect with one another. We uncover ways to inspire and empower, while we promote the advancement of those within our community. We provide a community that advocates for mutual respect, such that varied backgrounds and experiences are heard and valued.

  • Empowering driven professionals is an effective way to cultivate a new generation of leaders. Properly prepared, those leaders will continue the company’s tradition of growth and success. Our group offers opportunities to gain crucial insights, establish relationships with senior leadership, and network with other future leaders.

  • NIJI means “rainbow” in Japanese. We work hard to create a supportive and safe work environment for all LGBTQ+ employees and their allies. Our activities and programs are designed to educate and empower individuals to be who they truly are and bring their extensive talents for the good of the organization as a whole.

  • This platform promotes the advancement, development, retention, and recruitment of our talented individuals of Hispanic or Latin American heritage. We are passionate about the vibrant, rich Latin cultures that gave us our foundation. We also raise awareness of our traditions while we connect with and support our local Latin communities where we live and work.

  • To provide parents and caregivers the opportunity to create strong and impactful interpersonal relationships with one another and build awareness of their unique challenges and contributions to the firm.

  • Every individual is unique—some with how their brains process thoughts or how they access the world around them. We promote awareness and understanding of neurodiversity and disability through education and advocacy, thus improving the employee experience. We provide support and resources to employees needing accommodations and accessibility to foster a more inclusive workplace for all.

  • Veterans bring a whole host of skills and experience to our workplace, including leadership and a robust work ethic. Veterans Enhancing Talent and Success is proud to advocate for and support our community of veterans and active members of the armed forces. Our mission is to encourage one another through shared experiences, career development, and veteran recruitment and retention.

  • Women represent more than 50% of the world’s population but are under-represented in the corporate world. The Women’s Inclusion Network mission is to promote and champion the growth, development, and success of women across the organization. We offer opportunities to network and support one another. We work to educate, advance leadership potential, and find solutions to allow women to thrive in the workplace.
