Competition in the Russian mobile telecoms market is fierce, especially amongst its three dominant players. By the start of 2008, adoption rates were at an all-time high of 126 units per hundred people. The industry trend now is for mobile companies to exploit opportunities in the fixed and broadband market, the latter has suffered from underinvestment and poor overall infrastructure. As such, mobile players are using their wireless network to offer broadband services, and have started acquiring fixed companies as well. Russian market players have also been active in expanding to neighbouring countries in their quest for empire building.
