In March 2000, we arranged Yen 40 billion syndicated facility to BATJAC K.K., a Japanese subsidiary of British American Tobacco plc in relation to BAT’s acquisition of SCAT, a subsidiary of Sumitomo Corporation, which used to sell BAT’s tobacco products in Japan. The facility was the first solely arranged by a Japanese bank for a major non-Japanese corporate and concluded successfully with considerable oversubscription.
December 1999, arranged Euro 400 million E.I.B. guarantee facility for T.P.S.A., Poland’s leading telecoms provider and one of Central and Eastern Europe’s premier companies. The facility, launched at Euro 150 million and increased to Euro 400 million, represents the largest Euro syndicated facility in Central and Eastern Europe since the Russian default crisis of August 1998, and is the largest ever EIB guarantee facility in the region. The facility was awarded EuroWeek 1999 Emerging Market Deal of the Year.
November 1998, we jointly arranged DM280 million 5 year loan facility. This facility represented the first medium term syndicated loan facility in Central and Eastern Europe, after the Russian default crisis of August 1998. Launched at DM 250 million, the facility achieved an oversubscription and was increased to DM 280 million. Awarded EuroWeek 1998 Emerging Market Deal of the Year.
August 2000, acted as one of eight Co-Arrangers in France Telecom’s Euro 30 billion revolving credit facility to fund the acquisition of Orange plc. This facility constitutes the largest acquisition in the European bank loan market and exemplifies SMBC’s commitment to its European corporate clients and the European telecom sector.
