SMBCE enjoys a strong market presence in the arrangement and underwriting of syndicated transactions in particular for PFI, Project Finance, Shipping, Middle East and Russian clientele through a highly experienced Syndications division, which, for the EMEA region, acts through a dedicated team based in London. The unit’s activities have enabled the bank to achieve a leading position in the international syndicated loans markets, both as an Arranger and also as a substantial provider of funds. In addition SMBCE, drawing on the resources of its parent, has the ability to underwrite significant amounts in a timely and efficient manner. SMBCE is one of the most active financial institutions in the EMEA market place, servicing the financing requirements of a large number of diversified customers. In arranging and underwriting deals in the EMEA, SMBCE has undertaken the bookrunning role on a large number of financings in the region. Some of the significant transactions which SMBCE have been mandated in 200/7 are: Rabigh Refining and Petrochemical Company (PETRORabigh) US$5.84bn 15 year Commercial, Islamic, PIF and JBIC Facilities. These transactions demonstrate the range of sectors in which the unit is active.
SMBCE currently acts as Agent for in excess of 80 transactions throughout the EMEA region. It is a role that has been expanding steadily over the last couple of years especially for SFD originated transactions, for which the Agency team has the necessary expertise and experience. From a base of 10 SFD Agency deals in April 2004 – largely PFI this has expanded to over 30 within the two years. In addition to the nucleus of UK PFI deals it now includes other project finance transactions in transport and energy (2 of over US$1 billion each), shipping and borrowing based facilities.
In conjunction with their own trading book, the Syndications unit acts as an instrument of portfolio management for the EMEA region, buying and selling assets either individually or through programmes on behalf of other parts of the bank.
