SMBC Global Foundation, Inc. (the “Foundation”) was established in April 1994 as a not-for-profit corporation by SMBC (formerly “The Sumitomo Bank, Limited”), one of the world’s largest financial institutions, through its American subsidiary, SMBC Capital Markets, Inc. SMBC was created on April 1, 2001 from the merger of The Sumitomo Bank, Limited and The Sakura Bank, Limited, and is one of the world’s leading commercial banks, providing a comprehensive range of wholesale and retail banking services in Japan and worldwide.
The Foundation has been recognized by the U. S. Internal Revenue Service (IRS) as a charitable and educational private foundation exempt from taxation under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code.
Since its establishment, the Foundation has awarded financial grants on an annual basis to thousands of students, as part of scholarship programs with numerous universities in China, Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam, Hong Kong, Singapore, and other parts of Asia, as well as supporting the educational goals of Asian students abroad. In recent years, the Foundation has also been active in supporting educational institutions and community service organizations within the United States. |
